Numbers Norton is a character from the 1990 Dick Tracy feature film. He was played by James Tolkan.

Numbers was a bald man who wore eyeglasses. As Big Boy's accountant, he was aware of (and complicit in) Big Boy's illegal activities, but he was not violent or menacing as most of Big Boy's other associates were.

Movie Continuity[]

Little is known about Numbers, except that he worked as Big Boy's accountant and he excelled at his job. Despite his corrupt occupation, he showed signs of being religious, as he crossed himself after Big Boy executed Lips Manlis. Numbers was not shown to have died during the New Years Eve shootout at Club Ritz, and he was most likely arrested.

Tie-In Comic Book[]

In the comic book prequel, Numbers initially worked for Texie Garcia as the bookkeeper for her brothel. He presumably left Garcia's employ for Big Boy at some point prior to the film.

Tie-In Video Game[]

NumbersNES1
  • Nintendo Entertainment System- Numbers is a villain in the NES video game. He is described as a "calculating bookie". During the first mission, fake money has been found to be circulating in the city. The player collects clues, to include spilled ink at the counterfeit press with footprints. When Tracy investigates a show repair shop and sees that a shoes with green ink on the soles have been registered to Numbers, this proves he is the guilty party.

Notes[]

  • Unlike the film's other villains, Numbers was an original character created specifically for the film (similar to Bug Bailey).
  • The later character Charlie 21 (who was also an accountant) bear some physical resemblance to Numbers.
